NWT healthcare system falters as top doctor adds new orders

The Northwest Territories is introducing stricter public health measures and expanding current orders as the territory continues to grapple with a COVID-19 outbreak.

Starting Saturday, public gatherings in the Yellowknife capital and surrounding areas will be limited to 10 people indoors, up from 25.

All non-essential schools and businesses will be closed until at least October 4.

Public Health Director Dr. Kami Kandola says health care at NWT has been stretched and the measures are meant to act as a circuit breaker.

Kandola says the territory has the highest per capita active rate of COVID-19 cases in the country with 238, 141 of those in and around Yellowknife.

There have been 712 infections since the current outbreak began and two people have died.
