The Nova Scotia Mounted Police charged another man with arson in connection with a fire that destroyed a fish plant in the Pubnic Midwest last year.
The fish plant was being used by fishermen from Mi’kmaw when the fire broke out late at night on October 16, 2020.
The fire occurred two days after a clash at the plant when some 200 non-indigenous fishermen and their supporters gathered at the building, which housed lobster caught by the Sipekne’katik First Nation.
The gang’s fishery had gained national attention in September 2020 when its fishermen began setting lobster traps in St. Marys Bay before the start of the federally regulated fishing season.
In a statement Thursday, the RCMP said Sean Roy Messenger, 29, of Shelburne County, was arrested Wednesday and charged with arson.
He will appear in Yarmouth Provincial Court on November 29.
Police also arrested another man, 24-year-old Brendon Douglas James Porter, in connection with the July 16 fire.
