New Supportive Housing Project for Women Coming to Semi-Rural NS Community – Halifax | The Canadian News

The frozen ground did not interfere with the heat radiated through the air, as Soul’s Harbor Rescue Mission officially announced their building plans for another affordable housing project.

“The new building is 12 units and what we did is divide it into having a few bachelors, some one-bedroom and some two-bedroom. That way, we can have single women, ”said Michelle Porter, CEO of Souls Harbor Rescue Mission.

The new building is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022 and will provide supportive housing to women and their children in the form of a three-story residential building.

The funds for the project come from the second round of the federal government’s Rapid Housing Initiative, in partnership with the Halifax Regional Municipality.

The first round of projects will open this spring.

“The supporting part includes things like food and clothes. “The apartments will be pet-friendly, and they will all be furnished, but there are still needs that women have and we will be able to enter their lives in this way, as we were invited,” said Porter.

The apartment-style building will be built on the same site as another Souls Harbor shelter for women and children, which is currently home to residents living in a communal area.

“I feel so blessed. Comfort, tranquility, loving and supportive, ”said Anne, one of the residents.

Just under $ 3 million was allocated to Souls Harbor by the RHI investment. BANC Group, a Halifax-based developer, is recruiting additional resources and support to help reduce costs for Porter’s team.

“I came to this country more than 46 years ago and did not stay in a shelter, but I was very close to being on the streets. So, what they do, it’s close to my heart, ”said Besim Halef, founder of BANC Group.

The location of the supporting housing project is confidential for security reasons.
