New online map highlights winter recreation activities in Winnipeg

If you are looking for somewhere to skate, sled, snowshoe or ski, Winnipeg map maker Carol Cassell has a new online map to help you.

Cassell became known for leading Winnipegers to the best attractions, sales, and activities the city has to offer throughout the pandemic.

“Not everyone is familiar with their surroundings or maybe they are tired of the same toboggan run or skating rink and want to go somewhere else,” Cassell said. “Now all that information is one place.”

This card differs from her other offerings in that it does not rely on user submissions. Details about sites maintained by the city were found online, but she gathered some insider tips on favorite local locations through community groups on social media.

The map provides 120 different locations to explore, including St. Maarten / St. Vital Park where Cassell and her daughter recently visited.

“I was surprised at how big and long the sledge slopes were. They were a lot of fun and well maintained, ”Cassell said.

The winter activity map can be found on Facebook, but Cassell said changes are imminent.

She hopes to have a new website online this spring with all her different cards in one place. They will include Halloween and Christmas themed homes, playgrounds and garage sales.

There are also plans to expand her winter options to include one for ice sculptures and even dog parks.

“It is very rewarding. I get a lot out of knowing that I help people, it really fills my cup, ”Cassell said.

“And it’s a fantastic hobby that brought me through the pandemic.”

If anyone has a place they think should be highlighted on the winter activity map, Cassell encourages them to email the details to her at [email protected]
