The Departure Bay Activity Center on 1415 Wingrove Street went up in flames early Thursday.

Firefighters found the landmark building fully engulfed. No one was inside the wooden structure at the time. No injuries and no damage to nearby buildings were reported.

The gymnasium portion of the city-owned building, which is used for recreation programs, suffered significant damage, said Nanaimo RCMP, which is investigating the blaze.

A Salvation Army truck parked in the adjacent parking bay was damaged by the smoke.

Police are asking anyone who saw a person or vehicle in the area between 5 and 5:45 am on Thursday or who may have security or dash cam video to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
