Municipal elections in Portugal: the ruling Socialist Party still hopes for a victory

There were municipal elections this Sunday in Portugal, and Prime Minister António Costa hopes his socialist party will win again. In 2017, the party in power for two years had achieved a record victory by winning 161 town halls. But this time around. around fifty municipalities could change their political color.

Some 9.3 million voters were called to vote in Portugal’s 308 municipalities. The turnout was quite low in the morning.

This election takes place in a context generally favorable to the Portuguese government. After one of the most advanced vaccination campaigns in the world, the lifting of most health restrictions was announced on Thursday.

The results of these elections were to be known late at night.
