Grande Prairie RCMP said in a news release that both vehicles appeared to have been traveling north on Highway 2 when the accident occurred.

The deceased was the sole occupant of the car. There were two people in the truck and neither was physically injured, police said.

Police continued to investigate the incident at 6 p.m. Monday, RCMP said.

Northbound traffic on Highway 2 was diverted onto Highway 674 and motorists in the area were told to expect delays.

RCMP said they will not release the names of the deceased.

Sexsmith is 465 km northwest of Edmonton.

Earlier Monday night, RCMP responded to another collision in the area that sent a woman to the hospital with serious injuries after a pickup truck she was driving collided with a semi-trailer.

In a news release Monday, Grande Prairie RCMP said the truck was traveling east on Township Road 734 when it collided with a semi-trailer going south on Highway 2.

The driver of the semi-trailer was not physically injured.
