As of May 31, on the platform of the National Recruitment and Hiring of Medical Specialists, 9,275 applicants have been registered to occupy one of the 13,765 positions required in the health sector institutions, National Institutes of Health and the governments of the states that added their vacancies through the Institute of Health for Well-being (INSABI).

During the press conference led by the President of the Republic, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, at the National Palace, the general director of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), Zoé Robledo, reported that of the total number of places offered, 9,115 are unique vacancies, that is, of a specialty, in a medical unit, in a shift, but some of these may have needs greater than a single specialist doctor, “each doctor can choose up to three options, for what we count, until the cut today, with 19 thousand 964 applications”.

Zoé Robledo pointed out that 75 percent of registered doctors are between 30 and 39 years old, that is, it is likely that they recently finished their specialty, of which 51.1 percent are men and 48.9 percent women.

The general director of Social Security explained that there are 95 specialties and subspecialties that are required in the country, in six of these 66 percent of all the needs of the institutions are concentrated.

He indicated that in Internal Medicine 1,753 doctors are needed and 333 have been registered, an advance of 18 percent; Medical-Surgical Emergencies require 1,728 and 450 have applied, that is, 26 percent; in Gynecology, 1,572 are needed and 989 have shown interest, which represents 62 percent.

Likewise, he said that in Pediatrics 1,517 are needed and 949 have been registered, 62 percent; In Anesthesiology, 1,367 are requested and there are 1,310 records, that is, 95 percent; and General Surgery, 1,097 are needed and 571 have been registered, 52 percent.

Zoé Robledo stressed that the largest participation is concentrated in Mexico City, with 5,207, which alone concentrates 27 percent of the applications; They are followed by the states of Jalisco, with 1,511; Puebla, 1,311; and State of Mexico, 760.

He added that 20 percent of the applications are in these entities, “that is, if we add these, plus Mexico City, it is almost 50 percent.”

He explained that of the total number of vacancies, 4,040 have at least one application: 24 are from the Coordinating Commission of National Institutes of Health and High Specialty Hospitals, which cover 90 percent of their needs; 73 requests for PEMEX, 63 percent; 441 from the ISSSTE, 61 percent; 907 Ordinary IMSS, 49 percent; 2,250 to INSABI, 45 percent; and 345 to IMSS-BIENESTAR, 25 percent.

He referred that there are 9 thousand 725 places without application, of which 3 thousand 390 are in municipalities with a population of less than 200 thousand inhabitants, these are localities such as Taxco, Cuautla, Boca del Río or Zacatecas, “they are not necessarily rural areas, They are small cities, but they are not currently receiving the interest of the doctors who are registering; 38 percent of these vacancies are in Chiapas, Michoacán and Veracruz”.

The general director of the IMSS explained that 787 vacancies are in municipalities with a medium to high lag and that they have not received applications, 57 percent of these are in the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca and Veracruz, “and 573 vacancies that have not received not a single application is in indigenous municipalities, mainly from the states of Chiapas, Hidalgo and Veracruz.
