A chance of showers is forecast throughout the week as the city welcomes crowds to Calgary’s first full Stampede and parade in three years on Friday. But after a rainy June that had the city bracing for possible flooding, July is expected to heat up.

“For the month of June, the Calgary airport received 130.1 millimeters of precipitation, compared to the June average of 94 millimeters. There was above average rainfall,” said Terri Lang, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.

“The forecast for July shows that the temperature is forecast to be above average, but not much above average.”

There were many factors that worried officials about the possibility of flooding in Calgary in June, Lang explained. About 50 millimeters of water fell during that time, but there were serious concerns about what was happening upstream in the mountains and throughout the river basin.

The City of Calgary declared a local state of emergency in response to a three-day storm that dumped significant rain on the city, making it easier to prepare for rising rivers. Several roads around the Elbow River were closed, and a temporary berm was built on Memorial Drive to protect homes in the area.

The local state of emergency and the berm were removed when the weather improved and river levels dropped.

“That was a well-forecast event and they handled it very well,” Lang said.

The average temperature in June was exactly Calgary’s average temperature for the month of June, at 13.7 C. However, the temperature this June did not exceed the 25 C mark.

“There has been an absence of that hot, sunny weather that people equate with summer. We have yet to see that,” Lang said.

July is forecast to have above average temperatures. Lang said it looks like some heat is building up, but Calgary is not expected to have the kind of heat experienced last summer with the heat dome.

“We should start to see some temperatures in the 20s to 20s. That’s promising, for those who like warm weather,” Lang said.

This week, the weather forecast is unstable.

“There will be intermittent thunderstorms, that kind of thing. It doesn’t pour rain every day or anything like that,” Lang said.

People heading to the Stampede or Calgary Stampede parade should be prepared for rain, but also for high temperatures, as they are expected to increase over the course of the week. Bring a jacket and umbrella, but also be prepared to stay hydrated, pack sunscreen and seek shade, Lang said.

“Around 25 degrees might not sound that hot, but when you’re standing in the sun, it can get pretty hot,” he said.

Environment and Climate Change Canada expects a high of 25 C on Friday with sunny conditions, although rain is expected overnight on Thursday. There is also a chance of showers on Saturday with a high of 22 C and a sunny high of 24 C forecast on Sunday.
