An announcement confirming the decision is planned for Friday with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier François Legault.

In August 2021, Moderna announced a deal to produce at least 30 million vaccine doses per year “prioritizing the supply chain here,” federal innovation minister François-Philippe Champagne said. In exchange, the federal government committed to buying an undisclosed amount of doses each year.

Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel said at the time its installations should be running by 2024 and employ between 200 and 300 people.

Bancel said the quality of education and amount of qualified labor justified the decision to build the company’s first factory outside the United States in Canada.

Moderna is looking to develop mRNA vaccines for influenza, respiratory viruses, cytomegalovirus, Zika and even HIV, and develop treatments for cancer and cystic fibrosis.
