Moderna plans to manufacture in Quebec not only vaccines against COVID-19, but also a range of messenger RNA vaccines that could combat such respiratory viruses as seasonal influenza and respiratory syncytial viruses. The vaccines must be approved by regulatory authorities.

Moderna’s decision was officially announced Friday at McGill University during a press conference hosted by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Quebec Premier François Legault, among other officials.

McGill principal Suzanne Fortier said in opening remarks she looks forward to partnership opportunities with Moderna.

The plant is a $180-million project, Legault said. Trudeau added the plant will create hundreds of well-paying jobs.
