Mississauga Council votes not to rename Dundas Street – Toronto | The Canadian News

Mississauga City Council members voted against renaming Dundas Street.

Councilors unanimously voted in favor of a motion on Wednesday to give “no further consideration” to renaming the street.

The motion is by shovel. Carolyn Parrish and seconded by Count. George Carlson.

The street is named after Henry Dundas, a Scottish politician and lawyer who, according to some historians, extended the abolition of slavery in Britain by 15 years.

Dundas died in 1811.

The motion said the issue of renaming the street “provoked thoughtful scholastic reactions in support of the historic role Henry Dundas played, concerns about the cost and disruption associated with changing the name of Dundas Street in Mississauga and almost no support for changing that name. ”

A staff report it is estimated that the renaming of the street will cost about $ 1.8 million.

The motion said the “interpretations of history”, especially the “motifs and achievements of historical figures – are open to controversy and misinterpretation, especially when viewed through a modern lens.”

Therefore, the motion called for “no further consideration be given to the renaming of Dundas Street in Mississauga.”

During the meeting Wednesday, Count. Parrish said she did not want to “see $ 1.8 million spent” renaming the street.

“And it does not even include all the businesses next door and what it will cost them to re-jig,” Parrish said.

“If we want to spend $ 1.8 million, I would like to put it into equality and diversity and projects that address the problems of the Black community, but I have no desire to see $ 1.8 million go into something so frivolous.” she continued.

However, she said the city needs to look at its naming policy moving forward.

Meanwhile, the conversation continues as to whether streets in Dundas’ name should be renamed in other cities.

In July, Toronto City Council approved the renaming of Dundas Street and removed its name from other civic assets such as Yonge-Dundas Square and Dundas subway station.

The city said a committee would be tasked with coming up with a new name by the second quarter of 2022.
