Missing Cambridge man known to boy, 8, found dead at residence: Police


Waterloo police are looking for a missing man in the investigation of an 8-year-old child found dead in Cambridge over the weekend.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service says officers were called to a residence around 10 am on Saturday. Upon arrival, they found a dead 8-year-old boy.

A cause of death has yet to be determined.

Police have since identified a missing man who may have information to assist investigators. Curtis Hesselink, 41, of Cambridge, is known to the child, and there are concerns for his wellbeing and safety, police said in a news release.

He’s described as standing approximately 5-foot-11, with blue eyes, a thin build, short blonde hair, and facial scruff. Hesselink was last seen wearing brown khaki pants and possibly wearing a blue or black army-style bucket hat.

Investigators urge the public not to approach Hesselink and call 9-1-1 immediately if seen. Officers are actively searching the area of ​​Townline Road and River Road in Cambridge for Hesselink, including a nearby property.

“The tragic death of an 8-year-old, especially under unclear circumstances, raises many concerns for our community,” said Bryan Larkin, Chief of Police.

“I want to reassure Cambridge residents and the broader Waterloo Region community that we have dedicated investigators working around the clock to determine exactly what place took and locate Mr. Hesselink safely.”

On Monday, a spokesperson for the Waterloo Regional Police Service said initial information indicated “concerns relating to firearms.” Still, the police said it has since been determined that there is no current threat to public safety.
