Michigan recap: Pistons bring Hall of Fame Wallace back into the fold

NBA Hall of Famer Ben Wallace is back in the fold with the Detroit Pistons.

The 47-year-old Wallace, a four-time winner of the NBA’s defensive player of the year, was hired by the club on Friday as a basketball operations and team participation advisor.

“Ben is a Hall of Famer and a Pistons legend who has continued to come home and support our team and our organization,” Pistons owner Tom Gores said in a statement.

Wallace will assist general manager Troy Weaver and basketball operations staff, as well as head coach Dwane Case and the coaching staff as a mentor and development asset for the current Pistons and members of the club’s Motor City Cruise affiliated team in the NBA G League.

“He embodies everything we are building here and will be a real asset to Dwane, Troy and the rest of our staff,” Gores said. “Ben helped set the standard for what it means to be a Piston and he will be a tremendous influence on our young players.”

Wallace played 16 NBA seasons and nine with Detroit that included a league title in 2004. He was an NBA All-Star four times and an NBA team pick five times. The Pistons retired their No. 3 jersey in 2016.

Tiger’s top prospects

Outfielder Riley Greene and right-hander Beau Brieske have been selected as the Detroit Tigers’ minor league player and pitcher of the year, respectively.

Greene, 21, combined to play 124 games with Class AA Erie and Class AAA Toledo and hit .301 with 24 home runs while driving 84 runs. Greene is ranked the No. 2 prospect in the Tigers organization and is No. 7 in all of baseball in the MLB Pipeline rankings. Detroit selected him fifth overall in the 2019 MLB Draft.

Brieske, 23, started 21 games between Class A West Michigan and Erie. He compiled a 9-4 record with a 3.12 ERA and struck out 116 batters in 106 2/3 innings.

Goff of the Lions honored

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff was named the NFLPA Community MVP for Week 5 on Friday.
