Michelin Guide Announces 8 Vancouver Restaurants to Receive Coveted Star

Eight Vancouver restaurants have been awarded a coveted star from the Michelin Guide.

Announced Thursday night at an event at the Vancouver Convention Center, the restaurants and chefs named to the list include: AnnaLena (Chef Michael Robbins); Barbara (Chef Patrick Hennessy); Burdock & Co. (Chef Andrea Carlson); iDen & QuanJuDe Beijing Duck House (Chef Allen Ren); Kissa Tanto (Chef Joël Watanabe); Masayoshi (Chef Masayoshi Baba); Posted in Main (Chef Gus Stieffenhofer-Brandson); and San Lorenzo (Chef Jean-Christophe Poirier).

Michelin stars are awarded based on the evaluations of Michelin-trained inspectors who visit establishments anonymously, assessing their experiences based on five criteria: product quality, harmony of flavours, mastery of cooking techniques, personality of the chef in the kitchen and consistency between each visit on elements including food, service and décor.

Vancouver is the second Canadian city to be added to the Michelin Guide. Toronto’s roster was announced earlier this year. The Michelin Guide is currently in 38 countries and 60 destinations.

In addition to the eight one-star restaurants, 12 Vancouver restaurants received Bib Gourmand recognition, which is awarded to restaurants that offer a “reasonably priced three-course meal.” That price point varies from country to country, according to the Michelin Guide website. The Canadian benchmark was placed at $60 for three courses and a glass of wine or dessert.

Local restaurants named after the Bib Gourmand included: Anh and Chi; shot; Fable kitchen; Italian street food Fiorino; Kin Kao Song; Little Bird Dim Sum; Lunch Lady; Nightshade; Goose Pasture; Phnom Penh; Say Mercy; and of Vij.

Forty additional restaurants were named in the Vancouver Michelin Guide, including: Maenam; Miku; Mockingbird; Ophelia; Osteria Savio Volpe; Social Corner Per Se; Riley’s Fish and Steak; Sushi Bar Maumi; torafuku; Ubuntu Canteen; Yuwa; and others.
