Mexico reiterates the non-intervention in the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega

Washington. The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, once again called on the international community to strengthen pressure mechanisms to ensure that the President of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, resume the path of democracy.

“The only possible route for Nicaragua is to hold new elections with a process with guarantees, qualified electoral observation and true electoral competition within the framework of a State that respects human rights,” said Almagro.

The ambassador of Mexico, Luz Elena Baños, said once again that her country reiterates its firm commitment to human rights and full democracy, fundamental pillars of the organization. “It calls on the Member States of the OAS, to find, through dialogue of respect for sovereignty and non-intervention, the ways to strengthen democracy and respect for human rights in the hemisphere,” he stressed.

The OAS Permanent Council held an extraordinary session on Monday in which the socio-political crisis in Nicaragua was evaluated, in accordance with the organization’s charter and the Inter-American Democratic Charter.

On November 19, Nicaragua announced its withdrawal from the hemispheric forum and accused him of “interference”, after the 51st General Assembly approved a resolution in which it assured that the November 7 elections in which Ortega was reelected lacked ” democratic legitimacy “and they were neither free, nor fair, nor transparent.

Michael Campbell Hooker, Nicaraguan Alternate Permanent Representative to the OAS, rejected the session and called it “interference”. In addition, he stressed that the Ortega government maintains its “irrevocable” position of disassociating itself from the body.

He assured that in his country there had never been any detained candidate. “That lie falls apart of its own weight,” Campbell said.

Several countries spoke at the meeting about fostering dialogue with Nicaragua, calling for the release of political prisoners, and holding new elections.
