Mexican chapter of the International Trade Union League focused on the maquila is born

Formally, the Mexican chapter of the International Trade Union League to Make Brands Responsible was born and that in our country aims to start with the organization of workers in the maquila sector to demand compliance with labor rights.

Grouped in the Mexican Labor Union League, with a presence throughout the country, Puebla is the state where the union movement began, of the six that are at the door, to be able to demand the ownership of the collective labor contract at the time of the company Mexmode SA de CV (formerly Kukdong) that currently generates more than 5,000 jobs in 7 companies in the Puebla and Tlaxcala region.

“It is currently the largest private sector employer in the municipality of Atlixco. The company was famous two decades ago for the victory of the workers who managed to have their own union, all of this documented in international media such as the New York Times, and who have now formalized their presence in Mexico, ”said Julieta Mónica Morales García, secretary General of the Mexican Labor Union League.

It is worth noting that the League is a global coalition of maquilas and free zone workers from ten countries around the world, who demand justice from the big brands for what they demand: living wages, safe factories and stable jobs.

“We are trying to dialogue with the company for a good deal and for them to recognize us as representatives of our colleagues,” explained Julieta Morales, a worker in the court area and general secretary of the new organization.

The new union already has the documentation of hundreds of members within the company. In addition, it obtained legal recognition by the authorities as stated on the page of the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, where it is registered under number 7528.

New unionism in the maquila

In this process of change, with the support of international organizations, the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare was directly requested to review the cases in which the Antorcha Campesina organization has taken control of the independent union of Mexmode.

“Since the arrival of the Antorcha Campesina organization, a dozen of the company’s sewing lines have disappeared and more than 500 jobs have left the municipality. As a result of these and other problems, the workers assure that Antorcha has not had the support of the majority for several years, ”said Morales García.

It should be noted that the members of the International Union League to Hold Brands Accountable are made up of unions in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. We currently represent workers from 10 countries.
