Meat production will fall in Querétaro during 2021

Queretaro, Qro. The volume of livestock production in the state had marginal annual growth during 2021, due to the fact that it hovered around single-digit variations in some branches and even decreased the general production of carcass meat, according to records of the Agricultural Food and Fisheries Information System ( SIAP).

Carcass meat production added a volume of 435 366 tons from January to December 2021, a figure that experienced a decrease of 1.6% compared to 442 324 tons in the same period of 2020.

This decrease was motivated by the production of poultry (chicken), which reached a volume of 371 332 tons during 2021, ie a decrease of 2.3% compared to the 380 032 tons of 2020.

Poultry production in 2021 represented 85.3% of the total carcass meat production in the state, therefore it is the main contributor in this aspect. The rest of the varieties of meat had growth of only one figure.

The livestock sector experienced an increase in production costs in 2021, mainly motivated by the increase in the cost of inputs, including maize, a situation that reduced the production capacity of the sector.

According to the president of the Querétaro Regional Livestock Union, Alejandro Ugalde Tinoco, producers were at constant risk due to the increase in costs and the low profits they received.

Added to these effects, the union president explained, are the cuts in federal support programs, in addition to the fact that most are small producers who have less than 10 head of cattle.
