Mearse de risa, by Josep Maria Fonalleras

An RNE program does joking of the catalan language. Specifically, they piss with laughter when they verify that the Catalan translation of a Korean series that, in Spanish, is called ‘The squid game’, should be ‘El joc del calamar’. I am unable to understand the humor of the joke. It makes me think of another facet from years ago, also in a public station (in this case, Catalunya Ràdio). The presenter, Jordi González, discussed with the collaborators the word that designates a shiny black lignite and that, in Spanish, is the jet. One journalist made mention of the ‘atzavara’, the agave, but another snubbed him and said no, it was ‘atzabeja’. The laughs were terrific. It was strange, atavistic, almost prediluvian that the Arabic noun ‘az zabaja’, which in Spanish makes ‘azabache’ was ‘atzabeja’ in Catalan.

The RNE show has apologized. They said it was a joke in a joke space and you already know that humor can hurt sensibilities of some citizens, in this case Catalans. It is not the case. I am not hurt (particularly) by the joke, but by the absolute intellectual pettiness, that contempt for language, that is, for culture, that is, for civilization.
