MC bets on Edomex

Was there a rupture in the PRI of the State of Mexico? Two weeks ago, Luis Felipe Puente was already preparing for his arrival at the General Secretariat of Government. Alfredo Del Mazo had already agreed with Ernesto Nemer to take over. The outgoing official was free to seek the PRI’s candidacy.

Would you have the support of the president? The political head of the ruling party in the country’s most populous entity will abide by the results of the measurements. The national president of the PRI, Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, endorsed that two pairs of prospects —of both genders— be evaluated. In the first cut, the coordinator of the PRI caucus in the local Congress, Elías Rescala, was left out. Nemer will soon be on the sidelines if he doesn’t improve his positioning.

The local PRI does not want an alliance for the renewal of the Mexican government. And it has a first-rate female deck: the Secretary of Social Development, Alejandra Del Moral, and the federal deputy Ana Lilia Herrera are tied in the most recent records. Laura Barrera and Martha Hilda González could also take on the difficult task of facing the leader in the contest, the brunette Delfina Gómez Álvarez.

The contest would be between women, were it not for the resistance of Senator Higinio Martínez Miranda, who has appealed for an agreement between the candidates for Morena’s candidacy. A “Texcoco pact” that involves the current director of Mexico’s Customs, Horacio Duarte Olivares, who rules out other well-positioned officials from the ruling party.

Names? The Undersecretary of the Interior, Alejandro Encinas, and the mayors of Nezahualcóyotl, Adolfo Cerquera, and Ecatepec, Fernando Vilchis.

On the eve of the morenista polls, the PRI faces its permanence in power. Both political formations are subject to centralist decisions that —if poorly executed— will lead to a schism.

The numbers don’t lie. Delfina has no rival within Morena, if she compares herself to her Texcocan countrymen. Without allies, the PRI can take a competitive candidate and can choose between the two best positioned. And the Citizen Movement can defeat them if the former mayor of Nezahualcóyotl and current senator, Juan Zepeda, picks up the pace and takes advantage of the rupture in the other political formations.

And the bread? The best scenario for Enrique Vargas del Villar is that Zepeda breaks into the election with force. The contest will then be reserved forecast.

Side effects

WARNINGS. The proposals to eliminate the executive secretariat of the National Anticorruption System to transfer to the Ministry of Public Function both public contracting and the supervision of public spending —both formulated by the federal Executive— could undermine transparency and accountability in Mexico, warned the consultancy Control Risk in its Index of Capacities to Fight Corruption, prepared by order of the Americas Council. Since 2019, the country has registered setbacks in all the categories of that hemispheric ranking, but the most pronounced decline occurred in democracy and political institutions.

SIGNS. He was the guest of honor, but Secretary Adán Augusto López Hernández remained in Mexico City. The annual meeting of the National Chamber of the Radio and Television Industry began yesterday in Cancun without a top-level government representative. Neither the presidential spokesman, Jesús Ramírez Cuevas, nor the head of RTC, Rodolfo González Valderrama, accompanied the electronic media concessionaires at the opening of their annual convention. Is it because the main speaker was Senator Ricardo Monreal?
