the dutch Max Verstappen (Red Bull), leader of the Drivers’ World Championship Formula 1won the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday after a battle against Spanish Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), who fought until the end for the first win of his career.

Sainz, who alternated with Verstappen in the lead of the test and pushed him until the last lap, he had to settle for second place while the British Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) finished third.

“I tried everything to pass Max and we were very close to winning today. We have to take the positive and try to do it in the next one,” said Sainz, who was coming off a frustrating third DNF of the season last week in Baku.

“They were very strong in the race,” Verstappen acknowledged his rival. “I think he would have preferred to attack rather than defend (first position), but luckily everything worked out.”

Verstappenwho added his sixth victory in the first nine races of the year, took an important step to retain his world championship title.

The second classified in the World Championship, his Red Bull teammate Sergio “Checo” Pérez, suffered an early abandonment, and the third, the Monegasque charles leclerc (Ferrari), finished in fifth place after making up positions from the last starting line, from where he started with a penalty.

The Spanish Fernando Alonso (Alpine), who started from second position, soon saw his dreams of achieving his first victory since 2013 cut short and finished in seventh place at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal.
