Marek McLeod, 18, stole the spotlight in the debate of the English federal election leaders

First-time voter Marek McLeod became the star of the show for many who watched the federal election leaders debate in English on Thursday night.

The 18-year-old from Sault Ste. Marie had the opportunity to ask federal leaders a question and made a huge impression.

“In Ojibwe culture, trust and respect are the key to any relationship,” he began, before pausing with an “oh, shoot.” After quickly regaining his composure, the teen finished asking his blunt question.

“How can I trust and respect the federal government after more than 150 years of lying and abusing my people, and as prime minister, what would you do to rebuild trust between the First Nations and the federal government?”

Asking a serious question in such a high-profile setting is a stressful endeavor, but this isn’t the first time McLeod has come forward in hopes of influencing change.

Last year, the then Superior Heights Collegiate & Vocational School student served as Trustee of Indigenous Students for the Algoma District School Board, where told SooToday would share his perspective on indigenous and political issues.

“I have always believed that if you want to see a positive impact in your life and in your community you have to do it yourself, not only for your own interests, but for those who cannot do it for themselves. ”He told the outlet in 2020.

McLeod’s incredibly human stumble also resonated with viewers, with many taking to social media to shout the identifiable moment and applaud the University of Ottawa student for firmly finishing his question.

Others added that even seasoned journalists often got nervous on television and stumbled.

And someone even edited the McLeod moment in their own historical moment.
