Marcelo Flores, a touch of precision to the Tricolor

Marcelo Flores started playing soccer at a very young age when he was just 2 years old with his sister Silvana Flores, current Chelsea player. He was born in a very soccer cradle, since his father was a former Atlante player.

He is 18 years old and is the sensation in Gerardo Tata Martino’s new call, one day after committing to wear the tricolor jersey throughout his career.

The Argentine coach is looking for the last places for the final call for the Qatar 2022 World Cup. For this reason, he decided to use the promising players and give a pre-list made up of 38 players to play the friendly matches against Nigeria, Uruguay and Ecuador. Among them is Marcelo, an offensive midfielder who adds his third call-up and seeks to win a place against players like Hirving Lozano, Alexis Vega and Roberto Alvarado.

“During this process I have questioned many things. How much Spanish do I have to know to represent Mexico? How many years of my life do I have to have lived in Mexico to not feel guilty for representing a country where I have not had the opportunity to live? “Is it enough to listen to rancheras with my sisters in England? Does saying ‘yes’ to one country mean that I can no longer love the other two countries that have given me so much? Today I write with my heart and I want to communicate something that I have some time knowing internally and that I think it is important that they hear it from me directly: I will represent the Mexican National Team for the rest of my professional career,” he said on his social networks.

The youth striker has triple nationality: Mexican, Canadian and English. His father Rubén Flores is Mexican and his mother has Canadian nationality and English ancestry.

Marcelo Flores had already been summoned by the maple leaf team, this in a preliminary list for the Gold Cup in 2021, however, he was not called

“Although I have had the opportunity to represent several countries and I have always chosen to return to the camps of the Mexican National Team and that is no coincidence. Mexico has given me and my sisters the opportunity to feel at home even when our ‘home’ is thousands of miles away.

Arsenal opens the doors

Later he joined the Guelph Academy, located just an hour from his home in Canada, where he played soccer on a team led by his father. Flores enjoyed staying up late every day to train, even on vacation and in low temperatures.

Marcelo’s first apprenticeships in soccer were the legacy of his father Rubén Flores, certified as a coach. On a business trip, they traveled together to the Cayman Islands, where he broadened his vision of the sport.

At Ipswich, Flores trained rigorously and disciplined, using a training machine to improve the accuracy of his passes and hone his technique. The constant football friction with English clubs attracted the interest of several teams. Arsenal was the team that offered him the opportunity to enter the U14 in 2018, and later, at the age of 17, he signed his first professional contract.

His first call-up with Arsenal was on March 4 against Crystal in the Premier League, but the Mexican midfielder did not see action.

Marcelo is not the only Mexican to play for Arsenal, since Carlos Vela made his debut in 2008, but he did so until his second stage.

“I’ve been saying for a long time that before I’m 19 I want to be a professional player, whether it’s here at Arsenal or somewhere else, on loan or permanent. I want to play the World Cup before I am 19 years old. My birthday is in October and the World Cup is a month later, so I want to be in the squad that will play the World Cup and make my debut with Arsenal earlier,” said Marcelo Flores, for Football London.
