Maple Leafs vs. Lightning Game 7: Live Score, Updates, 2022 NHL Playoffs First Round Highlights

Maple Leafs. Flash of lightning. Game 7, Saturday night. What more can you ask?

Toronto and Tampa Bay wrap up their first-round series with Game 7 at Scotiabank Arena. The Lightning forced a series decider after winning Game 6 on Thursday, thanks to Brayden Point’s overtime goal.

The Maple Leafs look to wrap up their first playoff series victory since 2014. They have lost four straight Game 7s and five straight winner-take-all contests and are 0-9 in series-clinching games since 2013. .

“I think we came out a little flat in those games,” Leafs forward William Nylander said. from the team’s previous 7 Games. “Maybe a little afraid of losing. We don’t need to be afraid of losing (Saturday night).”

All fear can be erased with a home win. This feels like a different team from the Maple Leafs, one that can make a legitimate run in a Cup if they can get past back-to-back defending champions.

Standing in their way is a Lightning team that may not feel as dominant as it has the past two seasons, but is still dangerous and can steal a series. Tampa Bay is aiming to become the first team since the Islanders in the 1980s to win three straight Stanley Cups.

“I don’t want anybody to sit here and say, ‘Well, is it easier because we won two Cups if the Leafs beat us tonight? Okay?’ That’s BS,” coach Jon Cooper said of the Lightning’s mindset heading into Game 7. “We’re standing here on the cusp of greatness and why the hell don’t we charge through that door?”

The fate of these two teams will be decided on Saturday night. Will the Maple Leafs finally get that elusive series-clinching win, or will the Lightning send Toronto home early once again?

End of second period: Lightning 2, Maple Leafs 1

20:47: End of second. Chances at both ends in the last two minutes, but nothing to do. Tampa Bay outscored the Leafs. Last 20 minutes ahead.

20:44: Opportunity for Kucherov to make it 3-1 but he comes off the post. He was left wide open in the face of the tap-in attempt. Erik Cernak’s spinning feed created the opportunity.

20:40: GOAL! Nick Paul gets his second of the night. Great footwork to kick his skate puck to his stick and beat Campbell to the other side. Tampa Bay responds immediately to regain the lead, 2-1. Huge save at the other end by Rayo moments before Paul’s goal.

20:39: Nylander enters Vasilevskiy alone, but covers him over the net. It doesn’t look like the drive was on edge, it just failed.

20:36: GOAL! This counts. Morgan Rielly rips one down Vasilevskiy’s glove from the race. Skillful movement by Matthews to pass the puck to Rielly, who was jumping on the play. Matthews drew both defenders in, leaving room for Rielly to gather and shoot.

8:30 pm: Multiple chances again by Lightning in the man advantage, but Campbell stops each one. The penalty is killed. He has been Toronto’s best player so far tonight and the second-best player on the ice behind only Vasilevskiy.

20:25: It looks like the Leafs have scored, but the goal is disallowed. Tavares makes his way into the slot and shoots for Vasilevskiy, but Justin Holl is penalized for pre-goal interference. He put a pick on Anthony Cirelli, which allowed Tavares to get into the slot. Rayo remains 1-0 and Tampa Bay is on the PP.

20:19: All Maple Leafs to start the second. Vasilevskiy has made several saves in the first five minutes.

20:16: Point tries to play a turn, but is clearly in pain. He limps back to the bench, limiting the amount of weight he puts on that right leg. He is clearly upset on the bench.

20:11: Brayden point is back at lightning bank for the 2nd. A surprise considering how much pain she seemed to be in when she left.

End of 1st period: Lightning 1, Maple Leafs 0

19:53: What a stop at Vasilevskiy’s horn. Hedman flips the puck and Mitch Marner feeds Michael Bunting at the back door. Vasilevskiy makes the save, not sure he would have counted if he had come in anyway. 1-0 Lightning after 20 minutes

19:50: Moments after Paul’s goal, Steven Stamkos takes a penalty. Second chance power play for the Maple Leafs.

19:49: GOAL! Nick Paul capitalizes on a 3v2 to open the scoring for the Lightning. He had left the puck to Ross Colton, whose sole timekeeper changed addresses at Campbell. He made the save, but the puck ricocheted right into Paul, who only needed one hand on the stick to knock it down.

19:47: Brayden Point seems to be in a lot of pain. She tried to stop and it looks like her right leg gave out. She was grabbing high on the right thigh.

19:45: Less than four minutes to go, still 0-0. Both Vasilevskiy and Campbell look good from the start, each team exchanging opportunities. Edge goes to the Leafs on high-danger scoring opportunities, but not by much.

19:37: Multiple chants of “Sooouuuuuppp” echo through the Scotiabank Arena. Two stops from Campbell on Steven Stamkos back to back, then stops two shots from Victor Hedman at the point. Back to 5 in 5.

19:33: Penalty on Mark Giordano for delay of game. Alex Killorn tries to dump the puck and Giordano deflects it up and onto the glass. Next power play for Tampa.

19:33: The sentence expires. Just one shot for Toronto in the PP.

7:30 pm: Brandon Hagel walks out for tripping Kerfoot. Leafs get the first power play of the night. 4 for 25 on the power play in this series.

19:24: Not a ton of scoring opportunities, but John Tavares with the best chance yet. Flash turnover in his own zone and Alexander Kerfoot feeds Tavares up front, but Vasilevskiy saves the bag.

19:15: Puck is down, Game 7 here we come!

before the game

19:00: Starting lines for each side.

6:30 pm: As anticipated, there will be Andrei Vasilevskiy at the net for the Lightning, Jack Campbell for the Maple Leafs. Neither goalie has been particularly stellar in the series, but a strong showing in Game 7 might be all it takes.
