Manitoba seeks to turn Orange Shirt Day into a provincial holiday: Stefanson

WINNIPEG –

Premier Heather Stefanson says the province is discussing making Orange Shirt Day, Sept. 30, a provincial holiday.

During her first state of the province address to the Winnipeg business crowd, the Premier reiterated her commitment to advancing reconciliation with indigenous communities and leaders.

After the speech, he was asked about the prospects for Orange Shirt Day to become a provincial holiday.

“It’s certainly something we’re considering,” Stefanson said.

The prime minister says that before making any decisions, the government wants to speak to indigenous companies and communities.

“We need to make sure the consultation takes place.”

Orange Shirt Day is now a federal holiday to commemorate the legacy of residential schools.
