Man travels by landing gear from Guatemala to Miami

Miami The United States border authorities reported yesterday the arrest in Miami of a 26-year-old man who hid in the landing gear compartment of a plane from Guatemala.

“The individual was evaluated by Emergency Medical Services and taken to a hospital for medical evaluation,” said a statement from a spokesman for US Customs and Border Protection.

There was no immediate information on the man’s identity or status, although the risk of falling and extreme cold at high altitudes pose serious dangers.

The American Airlines flight from Guatemala lasted nearly three hours, the Miami Herald newspaper reported.

The newspaper published a video in which a thin and scruffy-looking man is seen shivering on the runway, near the landing gear of the plane, as airport personnel tried to help him.

In February 2018, two stowaways died when they fell from a plane while taking off from an airport in Guayaquil (Ecuador) on a flight to New York.

And during the chaotic US military withdrawal from Afghanistan this summer, several stowaways appeared to fall from the landing gear of planes evacuating people from Kabul airport.

“People are at extreme risk when trying to hide in tight spaces on an airplane,” the Customs and Border Protection statement said.
