Man sentenced to 2 years in prison for hit-and-run in Toronto that killed 17-year-old girl – Toronto | The Canadian News

A man was sentenced to nearly two years in jail and received a seven-year driving ban for a hit-and-run in Toronto that left a 17-year-old girl dead and her sister injured.

Shawn Ramsey was sentenced Thursday in connection with the June 7, 2020 collision at Keele Street and Calvington Drive in North York.

In December 2020, Ramsey pleaded guilty and admitted to driving the van that struck the teenage sisters in the early hours of the morning.

When Ramsey made a left onto Calvington Drive, he struck Olivia and Julia Sarracini in the crosswalk with his vehicle. Julia was thrown a short distance away. Olivia was thrown several meters.

Continuing west on Calvington Drive, Ramsey passed over Olivia, who was lying on the road.

Ramsey braked briefly, but then sped away.

Olivia died at the scene.

Two days after the collision, Ramsey turned himself in to police.

Before sentencing, he made a statement and apologized profusely to the family of the victims.

Ramsey’s jail sentence is two years minus three days, taking into account the time served before trial. They also gave him two years of probation.

The Justice of the Peace found that aggravating factors included the fact that Ramsey struck not one but two people, both of whom were in a crosswalk. Ramsey also previously faced driving charges and his license was suspended at the time of the collision.
