The victim was identified by the SQ as Bernard Cherfan, 42.

Cherfan was hit by at least bullet while he was seated in the restaurant on des Laurentides Blvd. near Catane St. in the city’s Vimont district. He was declared dead in hospital.

The homicide victim survived an attempt on his life carried out in Laval on June 15, 2015. The firearm used in the failed hit was traced to a factory in LaSalle, where the owner claimed to be manufacturing paintball guns but was actually making semi-automatic pistols.

Cherfan had clear ties to Frédérick Silva, the hit man recently convicted of four murders carried out in Laval and Montreal and the attempted murder of Montreal Mafia leader Salvatore Scoppa.

During a trial Silva underwent last year, it was revealed that Cherfan was believed to have helped Silva hide while he was being sought as a suspect in the attempt on Scoppa’s life and the murder of Concordia University student Daniel-Armando Somoza-Gildea.

Scoppa was shot outside Houston restaurant in Terrebonne on Feb. 21, 2017. Less than three months later, on May 9, 2017, images of Silva meeting with Cherfan were captured by a surveillance camera. Somoza-Gildea was killed 15 days later outside a strip club in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. The three other homicides carried out by Silva afterward were planned, but he shot the Concordia student following a heated argument that started inside the club.

Cherfan had a criminal record that includes a conviction in 2004 for having uttered threats. He was sentenced to pay fine.

He is the second person tied to Silva to be killed in less than a month. On May 11, Sébastien Giroux, 36, was fatally shot in St-Michel. He was scheduled to be sentenced on May 13 after pleading guilty to helping Silva hide from police following Somoza-Gildea’s murder.

The SQ, which is overseeing the investigation of the shooting on Wednesday, is working with Laval police to gather information on the homicide, which took place around 7:30 pm in front of numerous witnesses.

On Thursday morning, police were unable to provide a description of the suspect and did not know if he had fled on foot or in a car. It is possible the killer had accomplices.

Investigators are examining the site of the shooting and determining whether the shooting was picked up on local surveillance cameras. Crime scene technicians were deployed to examine the restaurant’s parking lot.

The SQ is urging anyone with any information that could further their investigation to contact them at one of the two command posts.
