Man in critical condition after being detained in Coquitlam; IIO called

A Coquitlam man who lost consciousness during an arrest Tuesday is in the hospital in critical condition.

Just after 3 a.m., he approached a Coquitlam Mounted Police officer and was asked to help find a man, who was said to have left his home under the influence of drugs and alcohol and was wearing only one t-shirt and underwear.

Another officer found the man outside a home in the 300 block of Balfour Drive after the officer heard pounding noises.

Two officers attempted to detain the man and a fight ensued that resulted in the man being handcuffed. Shortly after he had trouble breathing and lost consciousness.

Officers began life-saving resuscitation efforts until emergency services arrived, according to a statement.

The BC Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has been called in and is investigating whether the police actions are related to the man’s injury.
