Man faces second-degree murder charges in death of 2-year-old boy: Saint John police

A 23-year-old man appeared in court Tuesday via video link to answer the charge of second-degree murder in a case involving the death of a two-year-old boy.

Just after 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 18, police responded to a 911 call from a boy who was not breathing at an address in uptown Saint John.

“The boy was taken to the local hospital and later airlifted to a children’s hospital in Halifax,” police said in a press release. “However, on September 19, the boy died.”

On September 28, 23-year-old Madison Karrson Bennett was arrested as a result of an investigation conducted by the Family Protection and Major Crimes Units of the Saint John Police Force, with the help of the Fredericton Police Force.

Police have not provided further details about the defendant or this case.

The matter has been transferred from the provincial court to the Queen’s Bench Court.

The accused has been placed in preventive detention until the Court of the Queen’s Court chooses a date for the hearing.
