Man charged with murder in roommate’s death last month still without lawyer, court hears

Police announced Monday that Collin Dean Oxtoby, 48, had been charged with second-degree murder in the death of 55-year-old Kevin Allen Honish.

The city man charged with murder in connection with the death of his roommate last month remains without a lawyer, the court was told on Wednesday.

Public defender Morag Morel appeared on behalf of Collin Dean Oxtoby, telling Provincial Court Judge Gord Wong that the defendant needed to adjourn his case for a week.

Morel said there was no need for Oxtoby to be brought to court via video link to the Calgary Pretrial Detention Center, where he is currently held.

“If his attendance can be excused, please, I can waive the arraignment,” Morel said, during the defendant’s brief first appearance in provincial court.

“He’s in the process of hiring an attorney, so he’s applying on August 17, please,” Morel said.

Wong ordered Oxtoby back to court that day via CCTV.

Honish, 55, was rushed to the hospital on July 8 after police responded to a residence in the 1900 block of Cottonwood Cres. SE around 3am for reports of a male with medical issues.

“When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering from injuries believed to be consistent with an assault, and he was transported to the hospital in serious condition,” police said in a news release.

On July 16, Honish died at the hospital as a result of his injuries, they said.

“Investigators believe the assault occurred at a residence located in the 2500 block of 10 Ave. SE, and was the result of a dispute.”

Police said Oxtoby and Honish were roommates at the time.
