Man Arrested After Multi-Vehicle Crash That Killed Two On Parkside Drive

Police charged a man involved in last month’s road collision that left a couple dead in the west end of Toronto.

Artur Kotula, 38, of Burlington was arrested Friday morning and charged with two counts of criminal negligence resulting in death. According to police, he was scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall.

Kotula was driving a 2013 BMW 320i heading south on Parkside Drive on the afternoon of October 12, at high speed. It is alleged that it collided with a Toyota parent, causing a commotion on the road that involved a total of five cars.

The driver of the Toyota Matrix, Valdemar Avila, 71, died at the scene. His wife Fatima, 69, who was in the passenger seat, later died in hospital.

The incident has sparked outrage in the community, with people calling for an immediate speed reduction on the main road that runs from Bloor Street to Lakeshore Boulevard and leads to the Gardiner Expressway.

Area Councilor Gord Perks filed a motion in town hall last week, calling for a speed reduction from 50 km / h to 40 km / h, as well as a number of other safety measures on the streets to increase the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists heading to and from the nearby busy High Park. The motion was adopted.

Toronto has recorded a total of 53 fatal collisions this year so far, including 23 pedestrians, according to the publicly available Toronto police database.
