Magliocca Charged with Fraud, Breach of Trust by RCMP Following Spending Investigation – Calgary | The Canadian News

Calgary County. Joe Magliocca has been indicted by the Alberta RCMP for fraud and breach of trust.

RCMP announced the charges Friday afternoon: a fraud charge of less than $ 5,000 and breach of trust. An RCMP spokesperson told Global News that the breach of trust charges are in the context of financial claims.

In a statement from the RCMP, they said that the Calgary Police Service sent the RCMP a report alleging the incidents believed to have occurred in Calgary.

The RCMP’s federal and organized felony / financial crime unit in Edmonton conducted a complex investigation throughout much of the pandemic, including interviews with more than 70 witnesses and reviewing large volumes of records.

Investigators also coordinated with the specialized prosecution branch of the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service.

Magliocca has been summoned to appear in Calgary court on October 15.

Magliocca’s expenses have been under police investigation since July 2020, following a forensic audit that showed he made thousands of dollars in ineligible travel and lodging claims.

Since then, Magliocca has repaid the nearly $ 10,000 and attended training on the council’s spending policy. Other sanctions from the council included stripping him of his duties as deputy mayor and prohibiting him from submitting travel expenses until the end of his term.

Magliocca is seeking reelection in District 2. Calgary’s general election is Oct. 18.
