Lost Hikers Left by Helicopter After Overnight at Silver Star Mountain | The Canadian News

Nearly 30 people from various search and rescue agencies helped search for two lost hikers on Silver Star Mountain overnight.

Vernon Search and Rescue was called in to assist in the search around 11 p.m. Saturday, spokesman Trevor Honigman said.

The young couple were found Sunday, he added.

“They were cold and exhausted, so getting them out of there was not an option,” Honigman said.

A helicopter was used to rescue the couple.

“It’s very difficult terrain, extremely thick vegetation,” Honigman said.

“One of our search engines who has been with us for more than a decade said it is one of the most difficult searches he has ever participated in,” he added.

Search and rescue agencies in Kamloops, Penticton, Salmon Arm, and Kelowna sent volunteers to help Vernon Search and Rescue.

“The couple had been quite well prepared. However, their communication and navigation were their cell phones, and when they realized they were pretty lost, it was too late, their cell phones were dying, ”Honigman said.

It’s a good idea to always have a physical compass while walking, he added.

“There are quite a few situations each year where people get into trouble because their batteries run out,” Honigman said.

Vernon Search and Rescue was also called to the Lavington area to help a man who was injured while riding his motorcycle in the field, Honigman said.
