Local roundup: Gomez Jr. becomes just third St. Clair men’s basketball player named CCAA all-star

The OCAA recognized several St. Clair Saints’ basketball players on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s conference Final Four semifinal games.

The men, who will play in the semifinals against Redeemer on Wednesday, had guard David Gomez Jr. named a West Division first-team all-star for the third time while becoming just the third player from the program named a CCAA All-Canadian.

Gomez Jr., who joins David Korenic (2010) and Jimmy Parson (1998) with All-Canadian status, ranked seventh in the OCAA in scoring with 21.8 points per game.

Teammate Jalen Harmon, who plays guard and forward, was also named a first-team OCAA all-star after averaging 14.1 points per game.

Meanwhile guard Jesiah Deerr was recognized as the West Division’s 6th Man after leading the Saints with 8.3 rebounds per game, which tied for 10th in the OCAA, and contributing 13.1 points per game off the bench.

The women, who host Algonquin in Wednesday in Final Four semifinal play at the SportsPlex, also had three players recognized.

Sisters Jana Kucera and Logan Kucera were both named first-team all-stars in the West Division.

Both guards, Logan Kucera finished eighth in league scoring with 17.1 points per game and topped the Saints in rebounding with an average of 7.3 per game. Jana Kucera was 15th in league scoring with 14.5 points per game and topped the St. Clair team with an average of 3.5 rebounds per game.

Guard Bre-Aira Burton was named the West Division’s 6th Woman after averaging 6.9 points per game off the bench with 3.5 rebounds per game and 1.8 assists per game.

St. Clair volleyball

Three members of the St. Clair Saints women’s volleyball team earned OCAA post-season award recognition and one from the men’s team.

For the women, outside hitter Sarah Robinson was named a first-team all-star after averaging four points per set, 3.46 kills per set and 1.93 digs per game.

Outside hitter Chantal DeVlugt was named a second-team all-star after averaging 3.3 points per set, 2.84 kills per set and 1.03 digs per set.

Outside hitter Kiana Huggins was named to the OCAA West Division’s all-rookie team after averaging 2.2 points per set and 1.84 digs per set.

On the men’s side, outside hitter Jacob Derksen, who is an Essex high school product, was named to the OCAA West Division all-rookie team. He averaged 3.7 points per set, 3.28 kills per set and 1.14 digs per set.

Kaschalk gets nod

Windsor’s Patrick Kaschalk was named Great Lakes Valley Conference offensive lacrosse player of the week after a trio of solid performances for the Lindenwood University Lions.

A Holy Names high school product, Kaschalk had 14 goals and two assists in three games. He posted four goals and six points in a 13-9 win over No. 15 Florida Southern, added five goals in an 11-8 loss to the University of Tampa, which is ranked No. 2, and finished with five goals in a 13 -3 win over Lynn University.

Early in the season, the 23-year-old Kaschalk, who is a Windsor Clippers product, leads the Lions with 22 goals and 27 points in five games.
