In the last year and a half, so far since the operation of number 089, 378,188 have been received extortion complaints occurred mainly in the State of Mexico, Mexico City, Baja California, Guanajuato, Puebla and Veracruz, the entities with the most reports throughout the country.
Therefore, the owner of the Secretary from Security and Protection and Citizen Security (SSPC), Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez, called on citizens to “not lower their guard” during this Christmas season, and to report acts constituting crimes through the National Anonymous Complaint Service 0-89.
As part of the relaunch of line 089, organized by the National Information Center (CNI), Rosa Icela Rodríguez recalled that there is a national free line, completely anonymous, attended by lawyers and criminalists, and specifically dedicated to the professional and anonymous reporting of all crimes.
He urged the public to provide as much detail as possible about the manner, time and place of the extortion act, regardless of whether they are victims or witnesses.
He mentioned that in said number, in addition to extortion, it is possible to anonymously report possible acts of arms trafficking; homicide; money laundering; domestic violence: clandestine graves; violence against minors and sale of bills.
The 378,188 extortion complaints that have been registered through 089 between June 2020 and November 2021 have come mainly from the State of Mexico, Mexico City, Baja California, Guanajuato, Puebla and Veracruz; and according to data from CNI shared to The Economist, the areas most used to commit extortion or fraud are:
- Mexico City (32.2%)
- Jalisco (8.7%)
- Baja California (7.4%)
- Guanajuato (6.1%)
In 2022, there will be relaunches from 0-89 to encourage reporting
During the year 2022, the SSPC will carry out five regional relaunches from 0-89 with the support of the states.
In January it is planned to hold the first roundtable, with the presence of the entities of the Northwest, in Chihuahua.
Subsequently, the table will be held in the state of Oaxaca, summoning all entities of the southeast region.
The other three tables will be held in Tlaxcala, for the central region; Aguascalientes, for the western region; and Nuevo León, for the northeastern states.
Additionally, a national closure is planned in Mexico City, with the support of businessmen and the mayor of Miguel Hidalgo.
In each of the events the participation of the governors of the five regions of the country is expected.
Representatives of the federal authorities of the expanded security cabinet (the SSPC; the CNI; the National Guard; the National Anti-Kidnapping Commission; the Administrative Body for Prevention and Social Readaptation; the Executive Commission for Attention to Victims; the Customs Agency; the National Women’s Institute, the national DIF, the CNDH and the Financial Intelligence Unit), as well as academic and business leaders.
Due to the relevance of the project, each of the Security Secretaries, Government Secretaries, Presidents of Congress, holders of C4-C5, holders of 911, 089, and the Prosecutors of each of the regions will also be summoned. and entities that have led efforts in this area.
