Libya: seizure of cannabis wafers bearing the image of Putin

The anti-drug brigade in Libya made an astonishing discovery by getting their hands on more than 300 cannabis resin pads bearing the portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin, we learned from this security service on Monday.

In all, 323 platelets weighing 250 grams each were seized on Saturday in the town of Al Marj, in northeastern Libya, an official in the body for the fight against drugs and narcotics.

On images that have gone viral on social networks, we can see the hashish pads stacked on top of each other with, on each, the image of Vladimir Putin in a black suit and tie, with a stern face.

The cargo had washed up on a beach near Al Marj, according to the official, who could not give details on their origin, nor explanations as to the presence of the portrait of Mr. Putin on these plates.

The Libyan authorities are used to seeing the most improbable visual montages of intercepted drug shipments: on Sunday, seized pads this time bore the logo of a famous French luxury brand.

Trafficking in drugs and adulterated alcohol has increased significantly in Libya in recent years, fueled by porous borders after the fall of former dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.
