LG might have thrown a white towel into the smartphone business, but it hasn’t finished making smartphone parts and components.
LG Chem has revealed that it is developing a new folding screen cover window (the outermost part of a screen that prevents it in the event of an impact) that is as durable as glass but as flexible as plastic without causing creases.
“Unlike existing polyimide films and tempered glass-like materials, the cover window that applied LG Chem’s new coating technologies will maximize flexibility, while also providing optimized solutions for folding phones, such as making upgrades. to chronic problems such as crease impressions on the connecting part of the screen, “said an LG spokesperson at the company press release.
LG is calling the material “Real Folding Window”, which is coated with polyester film material on each side of the glass and is “thinner compared to existing tempered glass and has the same hardness, but no cracks on the screen.” says the press. release.
Also, unlike current folding technology that can only be folded in one direction, the “real folding window” can be folded both outward and inward. LG Chem claims that it is thinner than tempered glass, competitively priced, and can withstand more than 200,000 folds. LG is also working to develop a Real Folding Window 2.0 that does not require PET film.
LG expects to start manufacturing folding screen technology next year, with the ambition to begin full-scale sales in 2023, with folding mobile phones as the main focus and desktops, laptops and tablets doing the same later. .
