“Let no one suffer what we suffer”

Relatives of fatalities and people injured by the collapse of an elevated section of Metro Line 12, were present at the scene of the tragedy to place a memorial one year after the tragedy that caused the death of 26 people and more than hundred wounded.

At the scene, the victims demanded justice for the negligence identified in the construction and maintenance of the work, while calling on the CDMX government and other authorities to recognize the effects left by the tragic incident that occurred on May 3, 2021, when part of the elevated structure located between the Olivos and Tezonco stations collapsed next to the train that was passing at the time.

“This memorial is dedicated from the victims to society so that it is clear that this tragedy was full of impunity and corruption,” said attorney Teófilo Benítez.

In the same sense, he pointed out that they are already negotiating with the local authorities the permits to place a monument at the scene of the events that will also serve as a memorial for the 26 deceased people.

“Soon we will meet with the victims to ask them what kind of memorial they would like to install here, whether a monument or a space to place flowers or candles, whatever they decide,” he said.

On her occasion, Marisol Tapia, mother of Brandon Giovanni Hernández, the only minor who died in the collapse, called on society to take into account her pain to ask that the elevated part of the Metro collapse and that such a tragedy not happen again. , “in this or any other section, and that no one suffer what we suffer,” he said.

“The only thing we ask the government is to throw this construction out and do it again, if it really wants to repair the damage. There is nothing that can repair the lives of our relatives, with nothing I am going to repair the life of my son, but today we want to leave a mark and that this does not happen again, today it was us, we want to prevent tomorrow from happening another misfortune like this”, he exposed between tears.

For his part, Sergio Santiago, one of the injured, recalled that after the collapse he sustained injuries to his ribs, hips and torn muscles in his leg and arms, which has changed his life due to the trauma of the moment and the long recovery from his injuries.

The legal representative of 12 families questioned the actions of the local authorities in the investigation of the case, for which he announced that they will request the appearance of directors and officials of the Metro, including former director Florencia Serranía.
