Kingston’s Dawn House Goes Public With Homeless Appeal Does Not Discriminate – Kingston | The Canadian News

The COVID-19 pandemic has meant different things to different organizations and that includes Kingston’s Dawn House, located on the western edge of the city.

Dawn House supports and empowers homeless, vulnerable and marginalized women, and is now at the limit of its capacity as well. And with overcrowding and the onset of cooler weather, which means higher demand for a place to stay, that can be a problem.

“We have a waiting list and we get calls every day from people who want to apply and want to know how soon they can get in,” said CEO Maggie McLaren.

“And it’s like, wow, we’re taking people from two years ago who applied two years ago.”

COVID continues to add to those numbers. Due to demand, the facility needs to grow and that, of course, requires money. And that’s why most of a public appeal is getting underway in earnest over the next few days.

The story continues below the ad.

“We are looking to have enough money in our capital account to be able to go out and buy a property that we can then apply to the government for financing, as well as increase our housing complement so that we can double our capacity,” McLaren said.

Currently, the capacity is 16, and to change that, they hope to start raising half a million dollars.

“Without Dawn House I would have, I can’t even think about it. It wouldn’t have been a good situation, ”said former resident Lisa Larose.

“He may even have ended up dead.”

Larose, who appears in part of the appeal literature, cannot say enough about the nonprofit and the work it does.

“You always need a place like Dawn House,” Larose said.

“And just because you’re homeless doesn’t mean you don’t have anything to contribute to your community or the world. So if you give someone a chance, if you give someone a little hope, you can get a lot of good out of it. “

McLaren says it can’t say enough about the difference between the Lisa Larose that walked through our doors and the Lisa Larose that came out. Everyone involved is hoping that the Homelessness Doesn’t Discriminate appeal will only add more astonishing stories like hers.
