For many who plan, Monday’s Thanksgiving meal continues, not just for families but for others as well.

Once again, a couple of Kingston service organizations are helping those in need. “Lunch by George” is one of them. Volunteers continue to prepare for the holidays.

“Our minimum number will probably be about 100 people and there could be 130, but we are prepared for that, we are always prepared for more than we think could come, and that is what we do,” said Tanis Fairley, board of directors. co-chair.

Located on the second floor of the hall of St. George’s Cathedral in downtown Kingston, “Lunch by George” has been satisfying a need for “food” for nearly 50 years.

“We think it’s a calling for us,” Fairley said. “It is a way that we can help people in need.”

The pandemic continues to mean a different gastronomic experience, the days when customers entered the building are gone, now they are paper bags full of food collected in a window, as it has been since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

“I know sometimes people talk negatively about people in need and say, ‘Why are you feeding everyone?’” Fairley said. “Why do we feed them all? Because they are hungry and it is a job we can do. “

Several blocks from Princess Street, the folks at “Martha’s Table” are not only grappling with their daily meal schedule, but also preparing for the holiday Monday.

“We are planning 500 meals for Monday; we generally eat 300-350 meals a day, ”said Martha’s lead coordinator, Varley Taylor. “But since it’s Thanksgiving, we hope that maybe we will have more people.”

Both service organizations depend on the charity of others and, now, perhaps even more. A little thought when it comes to giving back.
