KFL & A Public Health Reports 201 New COVID-19 Cases, 1,612 Active – Kingston | The Canadian News

The upward trend in new COVID-19 cases in the Kingston region continued Thursday.

Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox and Addington Public Health reported 201 new cases, bringing active cases to 1,612, the highest ever and the first time the total has eclipsed the 1,600 mark.

The increase is likely due to the Omicron variant, which is highly transmissible, even in the early onset of infection.

“And that has been one of our main concerns and considerations with the appearance of Omicron because it is very communicable and we know that the cases are going to increase and we are seeing it now,” said Kingston Health Sciences Center epidemiologist Dr. Gerald Evans .

Of the new cases, the age group 18-29 experienced the largest increase at 77. 37 infections were detected among those 50-79 years old.

The case rate per 100,000 over the past seven days remains high at 427.3.

Hospitalizations and intensive care admissions are unchanged at 26 and 14, respectively.
