It is the beginning of a new year and, like last year, it seems that we will be spending much more time at home than we expected.

I crossed my fingers that 2022 would bring more freedom to travel and visit others. And that could still happen, but not yet. My strategy to make the current round of restrictions more bearable is to inject some comforts that will bring more peace of mind and enjoyment to living and working at home.

Adding some home automation features, increasing the cozy factor, and getting a better night’s sleep are on my to-do list for 2022. Read on for inspiration on how to cope with more “time at home.” From tech to afternoon tea, a few treats will help us get through this frustrating and disappointing turn of events. Think of a cozy hibernation for everyone and stay safe!

More automation

I must admit that I have been slow to enter the ever-changing race toward home automation. But if I’m going to be spending more time at home this year, more convenient and efficient ways to cook, clean, and monitor security will save me time and keep me on top of what’s going on in my home.

Some easy improvements for homeowners include: installing a front door camera / alarm system to monitor deliveries; control indoor and outdoor lighting from your smartphone (good for security and lights up the house on dark winter nights); and replace older older appliances with ones that have smart features that save time, energy, and reduce waste.

Simpler pleasures

It may seem obvious, but creating small daily deviations from the monotonous schedule of living and working at home can help us appreciate our homes again. Why not schedule afternoon tea (via Zoom) with a friend or coworker? Make it an event by giving yourself a special tea and a new mug or teapot.

Or look around your house every day and find something that makes you grateful, then photograph and post it on social media to spread your gratitude. Treating yourself to a little online retail therapy to get yourself some funky and trendy décor accessories is another easy way to update your home and make it more noticeable and appreciated.

These simple activities can focus the mind on happy experiences instead of getting bored, or worse, scrolling or getting lost on the Internet.

Customize cozy dreams

The ever-changing rules of the pandemic can affect our mental health and sleep patterns, so it’s important to find ways to promote and improve your good sleep habits. Consistent, quality sleep improves practically every aspect of our health.

Start by making sure your bed fits you well. For me, comfort comes first. If I have a bad pillow or a sagging mattress, I will not sleep. If you’ve had your mattress for more than 10 years, you may want to try something newer that meets your current support preferences.

Also, find a new pillow to suit your sleeping position (on your side, back, or stomach?) And consider sleeping accessories you can add to your existing bed: new sheets (flannel for that cozy feel and satin finish for those who sleep warm), a mattress and a duvet are simple add-ons that create comfort for better sleep during 2022.
