JT Miller’s night of 3s leads Canucks to beat Senators 6-2 | The Canadian News

Back-to-back victories have given the Vancouver Canucks a chance to gain much-needed confidence.

JT Miller scored and added two assists to lead Vancouver to a 6-2 win over the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday night. The victory came two days after the Canucks won in Montreal. They finished their five-game road trip with a 2-3-0 record.

“We were scheduled for one of those nights for a long time,” said Bo Horvat, who also scored against Ottawa. “I think we’ve been playing a lot of good hockey. For us, having a night like that, where a lot of guys are on the score sheet, definitely gives us confidence.

“But at the same time, we can’t be satisfied with that as well, and feel comfortable and think that this is going to happen every night.”

Luke Schenn, Tyler Motte, Tanner Pearson and Alex Chiasson contributed for the Canucks (8-14-2). Quinn Hughes had his first four-point night with four assists and Thatcher Demko made 19 saves at the net.

Adam Gaudette scored in his Senators debut (4-15-1) after being claimed on waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks. Brady Tkachuk also scored for Ottawa when Filip Gustavsson stopped 29 shots.

Things seem to be going from bad to worse for the struggling senators, who are coming off a disastrous November in which they went 1-10-1.

Stuck on a six-game losing streak, the senators will have a lot of work ahead of them as they head to Carolina on Thursday to take on the hurricanes (15-5-1) and host Colorado’s onslaught (11-7-1). Saturday night

Senators head coach DJ Smith admitted earlier this week that the past month has probably been one of the toughest hockey spells he has endured, as his team deals not only with losses, but also with an outbreak of COVID-19.

Drake Batherson, who was one of 10 Ottawa players to test positive for COVID-19, played his first game since Nov. 14 on Wednesday.

“As a coach, all you can do is push the guys to try harder tomorrow,” Smith said. “By going against it, you meet one of the best teams in the league (in Carolina), and you know what, there’s no better time to steal one and feel good about yourself than to go up against the hardest working team in the league and put together a play “.

The Senators and Canucks were fairly even in two quarters, but a late second-quarter goal from Schenn to make it 3-1 gave Vancouver the lead.

The visitors raced with him in the third period, scoring three times when Horvat, Chiasson and Miller found the back of the net.

The Canucks have had their own struggles of late, with the win in Montreal snapping a four-game losing streak. Head coach Travis Green said back-to-back wins will go a long way to get things back on track.

“When you walk into a room after the game and you win like that, your guys are excited, but I haven’t felt much disappointment from our team,” Green said. “I think they know they are there. They have been there.

“We have lost so many one-goal games that it’s not like they’ve been losing and being outmatched. They have done a good job keeping their faith and confidence high. “

Tkachuk answered for the Senators late in the third, but this was a sad outing by the home team in front of an announced crowd of 10,571.

Defensively, there were too many errors from the senators once again.

“I think if you go through the locker room, nobody enjoys the moment we’re going through right now,” defender Thomas Chabot said. “But I mean, it goes back to what I said, at the end of the day, when you look at the game (on Thursday) and the little mistakes that we make ourselves and that includes everyone, it includes me too.

“Those are little mistakes that end up costing you the game, so you have to make sure you are ready and we have to make sure we stick to our game.”

Vancouver opened the score at 1:38 when Connor Garland rocked Senators defender Victor Mete behind the net and brought the puck to Pearson just up front after Gaudette couldn’t hold it.

Gaudette made up for the mistake when he scored a power play goal midway through the period to tie the game 1-1.

Tied 1-1 to start second, Vancouver forced a deep rotation at the Senators end that led to Motte beating Gustavsson on the side of his glove.

Notes: Tyler Ennis and Michael DelZotto were a healthy scratch for the Senators, while Brad Hunt and Joho Lammiko did not play for the Canucks.
