Joseph Yaremko has been convicted of sexual assault with a weapon.

Judge Naheed Bardai rendered the verdict Thursday morning in a Saskatoon court.

He was also found guilty of illegal confinement.

Yaremko was indicted in June 2019 after a woman said she was sexually assaulted and held against her will at her condo in the Stonebridge neighborhood.

Surveillance video entered as evidence at the trial showed Yaremko entering the suite of the woman’s apartment.

The prosecutor described the incident as a “nightmare scenario” in which the woman was in the suite of her Stonebridge apartment, preparing to watch television when she heard a knock on the door.

The plaintiff testified that Yaremko went through the door and into her suite. The court heard that he wanted to get away from the nearby police.

The Crown alleged that the suspect closed the door behind him, before suffocating the victim and throwing her to bed.

The victim said Yaremko claimed to have a knife and a gun. She was sexually assaulted multiple times, according to the Crown.

Yaremko is due to return to court on January 13, 2022.
