Joe Biden orders the US to acquire 500 million Covid-19 tests to meet demand: official

The president of United States, Joe Biden, ordered the US government to acquire 500 million tests Covid-19 to help meet growing demand across the country amid the spread of the Omicron variant, an official from the White House a Reuters.

The request is in addition to another 500 million tests that the White House promised would be available to Americans in January.

“In addition to the 500 million tests we are procuring, today you have instructed your team to procure 500 million more tests, to meet future demand,” the official said.

Biden has been criticized for not focusing more on testing as part of his fight against the pandemic. A shortage of testing across the country has affected the response in recent weeks during the rampant spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant.
