First lady Jill Biden has expressed frustration that Kamala Harris was the first choice for vice president, according to a forthcoming book by two New York Times reporters.

An excerpt provided to Fox News from the upcoming book by Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns, “This Will Not Happen: Trump, Biden, and the Battle for America’s Future”, describes the vice presidential nomination process during Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign.

“‘There are millions of people in the United States,’ she began. ‘Why,’ she asked, ‘do we have to pick the one who attacked Joe,'” the authors wrote of a conversation Jill Biden had after learning that Harris he became a leading candidate to serve as Biden’s running mate.

However, several members of Biden’s inner circle supported Harris in the candidacy. Ron Klain, now the White House chief of staff, had been tasked with vetting the vice presidential candidates and, according to the book, told Biden early on that Harris was more qualified for the job, since that she herself had sought the presidency.

“Yes, Harris had attacked Biden more harshly than any other major candidate in the Democratic primary. Yes, the Biden family had seen it as slander and betrayal. In Klain’s assessment, that would benefit Biden,” the book states. “Electing Harris will show people that you are magnanimous and forgiving, Klain told Biden. He will show the country what a unifying leader you can be.”

The book also highlights Biden’s own reservations about selecting Harris as his running mate. Noting his “past romantic relationship with Willie Brown, the former San Francisco mayor who had appointed Harris to a couple of minor political positions,” the book says Biden described the behavior “as the kind of thing that should be off limits.” limits”.

Others considered to be Biden’s running mates, as discussed in the book, included New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, as well as activists and members of Congress from across the country.

Another candidate who lobbied hard for the job was stacey abramswho, according to the book, “failed the test” and was viewed by Biden advisers as a lost cause after he failed to win the Georgia gubernatorial race in 2018.

“Abrams fought hard to win real consideration, but he never got over the problem of experience” that Biden advisers warned him about, the book states.

Grisham, whom the book cast as a “no-nonsense former state health secretary buried in handling the pandemic on the ground,” told the book’s authors that the Biden team’s investigative process was “insane.”

“He asked me to talk him into running for vice president: ‘Why should you be vice president?'” Lujan Grisham said, according to the book.

“I didn’t ask to be vice president,” she told Biden. “You asked me to be tested, tell me why you think I’d be a good vice president. It wasn’t my idea.”

Other candidates discussed in the book, including Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill.; Representative Karen Bass, Democrat from California; and Rep. Val Demmings, D-Fla., were viewed by the Biden campaign as “compromising or risky” picks. Those candidates also came to a similar conclusion: Harris was going to be the nominee.

Biden’s advisers viewed Harris as the surest choice to win the White House, even with her history of attacking Biden.

“You know, white women are incredibly racist, just like white men,” a close adviser to Biden said in the book. “None of that was safe. It was risky. But it was the safest option we had.”

The book is scheduled to be released on May 3.
