IP requests change of route of the Mayan Train

Cancun, QR. The business, tourism and private sector of the Riviera Maya sent a letter to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and to the general director of the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur), Rogelio Jiménez Pons, to request the change of the line of the Mayan Train in its passage through Playa del Carmen and its integration into the city’s Peripheral Ring project, which will help reduce costs and impacts for the benefit of the success of the railway work.

The Riviera Maya Hotel Association, in conjunction with the Riviera Maya Business Coordinating Council and other tourism and private organizations of the municipality of Solidaridad, highlighted in the letter that “this proposal has the least negative impact on the economic and social aspects during the construction and operation of the Mayan Train will generate significant savings in federal funds during planning and construction and will bring economic and social benefits to the marginalized areas of the city ”.

In this sense, they emphasized that the Urban Development Plan already contemplates the outline of the Peripheral Ring and the width necessary to integrate the Mayan Train, currently Villas del Sol is the only housing development that crosses this ring and that it has the necessary width to integrate this railway project.

“The new Peripheral Ring will boost economic development and promote parallel investments in connectivity and services projects while consolidating social and urban integration,” said the signatories, who added that the execution time is calculated in three years and the benefits they will be for the residents of Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras.

In addition, they assured that the current route of the Mayan Train, whether it is built on federal highway 307 or along the right of way of the CFE high voltage lines, will generate social and urban fragmentation of Playa del Carmen, as well as effects on image, accessibility and mobility, in addition to marginalization and loss of attractiveness and competitiveness.

“The route of the Mayan Train through the urban center of Playa del Carmen will inevitably cause a break in cities, one with access to the sea, beaches, tourist services, commerce, medium and high-level housing, a greater concentration of opportunities and wealth and another , a dormitory city ”, they emphasized in the letter.

They anticipated that the current layout will exponentially increase the total cost of construction due to the modification of high voltage lines and the purchase of land to meet the requirements of the right of way.
