A BC event meant to mark one year before the 2025 Invictus Games will go ahead as planned, although Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s attendance remains up in the air.
The couple were due to visit Vancouver and Whistler from February 14 to 16 to attend the celebration, when news of King Charles’ cancer diagnosis broke earlier this month.
Earlier this week, Prince Harry was seen arriving at London’s Heathrow airport to visit his father. British media reported that the prince returned to Heathrow on Wednesday to catch a one-way flight.
The king revealed this month that cancer was discovered while undergoing a routine medical check and that he had begun treatment.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were scheduled to be in British Columbia this month to visit athletes and support staff from participating nations’ teams who are in winter training camp ahead of the 2025 Invictus event.
Next year’s competition, which will take place from February 8 to 16, will be the first time the Invictus Games will include adaptive winter sports such as alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, wheelchair curling and skeleton, in addition to the sports main courses such as indoor rowing. sitting volleyball, swimming, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball.
More than 500 competitors from 20 countries are expected to participate.
Prince Harry is the founder and patron of the Invictus Games Foundation, which organizes the international multi-sport event for wounded, injured and ill military men and women.
The couple was last in town in November 2023. During that visit, Markle visited the Vancouver-based charity Justice for Girls, an organization that supports teenage girls living in poverty.
The couple had also made a surprise appearance at a Vancouver Canucks‘ game. Prince Harry participated in a puck-giving ceremony, as his grandmother had done years before, before enjoying the rest of the game with Markle from a VIP box alongside officials and local leaders.
The couple previously lived in North Saanich on Vancouver Island for three months in 2020 after leaving Britain and royal life behind.
According to Prince Harry’s book Spare, the couple considered settling in BC before moving to Los Angeles, where they now reside with their two children.
Markle had previously starred in the TV series Suits, filmed in Toronto, which aired between 2011 and 2019. The series has seen a huge boom in popularity on streaming services in recent months, leading to news that it will be was developing a Suits revival under original showrunner Aaron Korsh. NBC has since given a pilot order to the revival, which is rumored to set production in Vancouver.
