In a statement, the RCMP said that police in Fort St. John were called at 7 pm on March 8 after a report that an intoxicated and suicidal woman was driving northbound on Highway 97.

“Police located the woman in her vehicle at a gas station in the 16900-block of Highway 97 and attempted to speak with her, but she reportedly drove away,” the statement read. “Concerned for her safety, and that of other motorists, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop with the woman and her vehicle, however, she allegedly failed to stop.”

The woman’s vehicle was found soon after on Hwy. 97 in a ditch. The woman was found outside her vehicle and unconscious. She died at the scene.

The IIO BC is now investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the woman’s death.
